Q&A WITH AMY GILDNER
BSc Kinesiology, Dalhousie

Certified Pilates Instructor
HOW DID YOU HEAR ABOUT STRIVE?
Not so much “heard” but saw some people doing an absolutely killer workout across from my building last summer in the park. Did some investigation and discovered it was Strive. Asked around to some of my friends who had attended the classes and raved about it. Started following on Instagram then reached out!
YOUR THOUGHTS AFTER SWEATING WITH US?
How GOOD I feel…and not just physically exhausted (because I definitely am) but how mobile and loose I feel, despite just having a workout. I always feel happy when I leave because the positivity is infectious. It’s hard not to be in a good mood when you’re in Strive.
WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR IDEOLOGIES?
To stop viewing exercise as some dreaded activity that you “have to do” (be it to lose weight, look a certain way, because your doctor told you to, etc). Exercise can be anything-that’s why I simplify the idea of exercise to my patients as “movement”. We should all just MOVE more. I don’t care if that means getting up 10 minutes earlier to catch the bus 2 stops away, or going for a walk with a friend instead of sitting and having coffee. I believe that once we remove the negativity associated with exercise is when we will start seeing results and having an overall generally healthier and happier population. Also, NO ONE deserves to be in pain. I’ve heard lots of excuses (I am old, I run a lot…) as to why people are in pain, which are just not true. Something can be done to help.
WHAT IS YOUR TREATMENT STYLE/SPECIALTY?
I specialize in individualized, manual treatment with patients. I am only hands on, with the exception being some acupuncture. I was a personal trainer for years and provide comprehensive movement screens and exercise rehabilitation for all clients. I will always give homework and will know if you are doing it.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN PRACTICING?
Just about to hit 3 years.
WHY YOU ARE MOST EXCITED TO WORK WITH US?
I like the energy at Strive. I like working with young individuals who are passionate about their health and take care of their well-being; these are the clients Strive attracts. Taking part in several Strive classes myself, I can say confidently that there is a lot of overlap between Strive’s workout (especially in the warm up) and a lot of physiotherapy treatment. It’s rare to find such an educated exercise class that also makes you sweat.
HOW YOU CAN ADD VALUE TO OUR TRAINING METHOD?
Active rehabilitation is the best physiotherapy treatment for long term maintenance and prevention of injuries. I will diagnose people’s areas of pain, provide manual treatment to get you pain free, then communicate with Ryan and Martin with the type of injury you have, and how to best rehabilitate it. A multidisciplinary approach to treatment always gets the best results.
WHAT IS THE BIGGEST MISCONCEPTION ABOUT PHYSIO?
That we hook you up to machines and walk out of the room. Some physios may do that…but I don’t. Also, that you need a doctor’s note to see a physio-this may be true for some insurance plans, but that is pretty rare.
WHAT IS YOUR PERSONAL DEFINITION FOR THE WORD STRIVE?
Constantly working to achieve something you may have once thought was impossible.
WHAT DO YOU STRIVE FOR?
Making others feel happy and healthy.
